Wife Of POW Is On Pins And Needles
MIDLAND (Staff) "I feel
fine." Mrs. Louis F. Makowski beamed today.
"We had been waiting on pins and
needles, sticking pretty close to home waiting for this call."
Mrs. Makowski was contacted by Webb
Air Force Base wing commander Col. Stanley Umstead about 2:30
p.m. Thursday who confirmed that her husband's name was on the
list of POWs expected to be released this weekend. No exact date
of return could be given by the Air Force, however.
"Now," she said, "the
next big thing in my life will be the call from Lou." Released
prisoners may call home after reachingClark Air Force Base in
the Philippines.
The family will not leave to meet Makowski
until notified by the Air Force where he will enter the U.S. They
will not fly to Clark Air Force Base to meet him.
"It won't take us long,"
Mrs. Makowski said when asked how soon she would leave after notification
that arrangements were made by the Air Force.
Lt. Col. Makowsky, a navigator, was
shot down over North Vietnam in 1966. He was listed as missing
in action until 1969 and then confirmed as a POW by the Air Force.
Two POW's, Lt. Cmdr. Robert Shumaker
and Lt. Col. John Dunn, both imprisoned in the same camps as Mrs.
Makwoski's husband, called her recently after their release.
"Both said he was in good health
and good spirits," she reported.
Mrs. Makowski has had letter contact
with her husband since 1970.
The couple has three children, Cheryl,
16, Matthew, 13, and Rhoda, 7. They all have planned what to take
when we leave," Mrs. Makowski said.
