i never knew anyone who was a pow during ww2. if i did,i would feel honered. i watched many documentaries on pow camps as well as battles with the japanese and germans. i feel that the one word that most describes any one of those american men is hero! they all have my respect,my prayers that those still living are not still tormented in their minds, and when i walk through the woods and trails outdoors,or drive wherever i please, worship who i please, all these things are because we are free, and our men gave their all so we can be. i thank each and every one who may read this comment. and God Bless America.

I was too young to serve during the vietnam war. however I did serve in the Gulf war, And what I have read here has made me learn a new respect for men like Ted Guy, and Jim Stockdale. We all have it easy compared to these heros, and they are TRUE heros. G.B.U all.

An extremly thought provoking web site. As a Reserve Member of the Armed Forces here in the United Kingdom we are still taught various Lessons / Skills that our Brothers & Sisters of the US & Allied forces learnt during the South East Asia conflict. God Bless to one & all & as we remember our own dead & missing of all conflicts may we also say a silent prayer for all that did not return home & for those that did return but are still fighting the War. "At the going down of the Sun we Will remember them, for they grow not old"

As a Life Member of Chapter 818 VVA, I proudly wear my bracelet bearing the names of RI servicemen who gave their lives. On Memorial Day, I and other Vets call out their names, keeping their memories alive. Among those names are several MIA's that needs to be accounted for. They will always be remembered in our thoughts and prayers.

I wore (and still keep in my memory) the POW/MIA bracelet of Kelly F. Cook from Iowa.
If any of his family members should see this, please contact me.
Also, I am looking for the name of the Officer that lived in the Clairemont Mesa section of San Diego. He wrote a book on the Hanoi Hilton.
Wonderful site.

I SERVED IN NAM 1970-71. I'VE READ SEVERAL BOOKS ABOUT THE POW'S AND THEIR TREATMENT. IT MADE ME MAD AS HELL TO KNOW WHAT THEY WENT THROUGH AND TO THINK THEY DID IT WITH HONOR AND DIGNITY. NEVER BETRAYING ONE ANOTHER OR THE U.S.A. THEY ARE THE REAL HEROS OF NAM. THEY EVEN DID IT FOR THE LOW LIFE COWARD DRAFT DODGERS. THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED TODAY. I SALUTE EACH OF THEM, LETS NOT FORGET THE ONES THAT GAVE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE. AND TO THOSE, THAT COULD STILL BE THERE.

I just finished reading Col. Jerry Denton's book "When Hell Was in Session", and was just looking for more some pictures of how emaciated the prisoners were to show my 10 yr. old daughter. I was trying to explain some of the horrendous torture and treatment the folks went through in the name or our freedom. I pray, that she and others her age can understand what a price was paid, so we can live our lives openly and freely as we do now. Thank you for presenting this information for al generations to read.

For over thirty years, I have had a bracelet bearing the name of Maj. Richard Hawthorne. The brave men who went to serve in Viet Nam were the men of my generation. I am now 54 years old and still alive. So why does the government say there are no more POW/MIA's who could still be living? We need a FULL accounting! Remember - it's "til he comes home.

I wore Lt. Col. Robinson (Robbie) Risner's bracelet until the day I happened to be watching the news and saw him honored on his return from the prison camp. I told everyone I knew to wear a bracelet and never take it off til your POW is returned. I've often wondered what had happened to him and if he was able to survive the horrors of that war. Thus, it was a pleasant surprise to see his picture when surfing about a film "Return with Honor". [Col Risner is pictured just above John McCain whom my husband & I voted for in this last primary]. When I was younger I wrote numerous letters to several of my cousin's buddies in the Korean War. During the Vietnam war I wanted to do more but at least I was proud to wear a POW bracelet and still have it and will never part with it! Say hi and let Robbie Risner and all the other POWs and families of the MIAs that our prayers are still with all of them. Dolly

I am doing a term paper for my history class. I have found several books, and now this web site, and both sources have been great help to me. As I read more about what the POW's endured and how they coped with it, I find myself respecting each and every one that risked their lives for this country. I want to thank thoses that did fight. I didn't realize until now exactly how much you put on the line.

Thank you for fighting, for bleeding, for enduring so much discomfort and pain, so I can remain free. The only one who gave more than you was our Lord, Jesus Christ. Americans and American government owe you their all. I pray you will receive it. I pray for those our country has abandoned and is obviously not going to bring home, that our Lord will grant them a sweet and peaceful release so that they may spend their eternity in Paradise, where God will personally wipe away every tear, and there will be no more wars.

I'm grateful for your impressive memorial. It touches a close chord as I went thru USAF UPT with POW's Tom Moe and Myron Donald. A college ROTC mate was Fred Flom. Their sacrifices, along with the ultimate price paid by my UPT roommate, Travis Scott, KIA while flying a Jolly Green on a SAR mission, make my service seem embarrassingly simple. My Uncle served 2 tours in the 'Nam as a door gunner on a Huey and a mechanic. I have listened wholeheartedly to his stories and been amazed at the injustice and wrong doing his comrades endured. One came home after 2 tours only to die in a trailer fire. In his obituary it was only mentioned that he served in Vietnam. Have been an advocate for the POW/MIA issue ever since I got my first bracelet for James Bell back in the 70's. He was one of the lucky ones -- he came home! But I now have a quest, taking shape in the form of a trilogy fiction book I'm penning on the subject. Something I am having trouble with: I am keeping the name of EDWIN PALMGREN alive... he is one of the ones who is supposed to have gone to Russia. Has anyone heard any recent information on this issue? (Since '97?) Would apppreciate any help. Thanks for this great site and keep up the good work. To all the vets -- WELCOME HOME. Keep the faith all. Let's hope the truth will out before it's too late for some of these fine men.

Hello,I am a 17 year old student ans I would just like to thank you for making this great site. I have a report to do on POWS for school and I have looked at alot of site with in the past 2 days. I have found that this site has been more help than any other one that I have been to.
Back in March of 1999 I went to DC with my school. While we were there I visited the wall. I found my self (though I new of no one on the wall) emotionally involved. All of my friends and I couldn't help but cry. At that moment we all stopped and prayed for all the HEROS that served in the war. Also while I was there I baught a POW braclet. At the time I didn't think to look for my guy (SFC Robert D.Owen) on the wall. However, yesterday I was on line and ran accross a site that had all the mens names that are on the wall. I took a chance and after about 2 hours of serching I found my guy. This momment was very emotional to me, I started to cry in memory of this great Hero. I can only imagen the pain his family and many others families felt. I thank the lord that I didn't have to go through that horriable time.
I must thank you again for everything you have done. Keep up the great work you have done and if you change or add to this site please let me know. Thank you,

RE.son tay-I was a prisoner there for 2.5 months before being turned over to the U.N. on nov. 30 1975!!I was captured in Banmethuot on Mar. 10th,1975 and held for 6 months in 3 different camps in South Vietnam before we were trucked north past Hanoi to our 4th camp i.e. son tay. I was not in the military but a civilian. the NVA classified us 4 ways. 1st they said we were being held to protect us as full scale war raged around us at the fall of Banmethuot-then after a few weeks they said we were prisoners of war-after 6 months they moved us to son tay where we were now called guests of North Vietnam-2 days before we released they said we were refugees and so would be turned over to the High Commissioner of Refugees for the U.N.- we suffered food and medical deprivation as well as constant interogations in son tay. Does anyone know of any other photos of the Son Tay camp. By the way we moved out of Banmethuot along the Ho Chi Minh trail to a camp well west of Peiku-we had to go deep into the jungle to dig up manioc and bring it back to the camp for food-the other prisoners said it was contaminated with agent orange-we ate it anyway -we had no other food-so 24 years later I still wonder about possible effects-and 24 years ago is still like it was yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love all you guys! May God bless you and keep you.Stumbled onto this site while reading John McCain's book, Faith of my Fathers, which I received for Christmas.
ADuring the War we accepted the Lucky Strike offer of cigarettes to Viet GI. We wanted smokes to go to any GI in combat. Not knowing, in a few weeks received letters and cards from in-country troopers. Wrote to all, especially Ssgt Robert Grammer 173rd ABN Brigade. After some nine months of correspondence he visisted with us in NJ where we were living at the time between tour one and two. What a fantastic experience for us! Wore my POW bracelet now stored with my precious memories. Capt. Charles Huneycutt 11/10/67. Sighted in the area of the wreak of this plane. Been to see him on the Wall on business trips to DC. He never can back. Lost touch with Robert Grammer after difficulties in this life. Unable to locate him through 173rd associaton. My heart bled for all you guys during the war. The protesters and the government put you all in the vice grip of the enemy. In plain English, you got screwed over.
You were asked to do the unreasonable and did it with honor and bravery. Welcome home and may God bless you all. We love you.

I was young & ignorant when the war was going on in Vietnam (born in 57). But I always held these veterans up as my heros. How anyone could fault the men who served there & paid such a high price for doing our government's will is beyond me. GOD BLESS ALL THE VETS & THANK YOU FOR MY FREEDOM & THAT OF MY CHILDREN.
I will NEVER forget the POW/MIA's.

I am a second year psychology major in Boston. I originally been this project with the idea that i would gather a little info about Vietnam
and writing a 4 page paper and forgetting about the topic. I was wrong. I am so hooked on this topic. I have read Larry Guarino's book
and was amazed at what really happened in Vietnam. In High School, we nevered learned about the Vietnam War, because I think that
it is the War that America would like to forget about. That's not a good thing. I am glad to have found this website and several others like
it that give the POWs and the veterans some justification and acknowledgement. I am going to continue my education and finish with my
Master's Degree right away. I know that I must write a great deal about one subject. I definitely found my subject. I
If anyone has any information that could help me, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, Lauren

This is really a shocking dose of reality! I'm appalled to think that the Government that we're supposed to trust could do such a thing. This is my first visit to a Pow website and i ffound it quite by accident. I'm certainly glad I did. I'm the widow of a 16 yr Navy veteran who never talked much about his experiences. Now I understand why! I had a POW/MIA bracelet in high school in the 70's with the name of Capt. Willian Burns and would like any help on how to go about finding any info on either him or his surviving family. I don't have any other info on him as i had put the bracelet away several years ago & don't remember the rest of the info that was on it.

It (God forgive me makes me hate America for letting you go through this. I am proud of all of you and please don't let the past keep taking from you. you are our Hero's. I was so young when my brother went to Nam and I can remember the fear I saw in my mothers eyes. You have nothing to be ashamed of. You should stand proud. We the people (not me I would have stopped any slander you came home too) screwed up, Forgive them for they know not what they are do. Thank you for the greatest sacrafice any one can ever give. Your life and mind. Welcome home my Hero's and may God hold our hero's close to his heart tha are MIA/POW's. And give comfor to there families. I will never stop fighing to bring them home or account for them. I will pray that someday your scares both in your heart and out, may heal as bast they can. Don't let the enemy win that part of you that you have left. With all I have and all that I am, I respect you. Please live, really live do this now for yourself. you have NOTHING to be ashamed of. We, the American people and our Goverment are the ones to be ashamed of. I am sorry you came home to yet another hell, but i was with you, believed in you and I still do. God be with you. To the family of Col Guy my heart goes out to each of you, may Col Guy rest in peace. My husband was in Vietnam June 1968 thru September 1969 in Hue and I thank God everyday that he returned safe to me and our children. He suffers everyday with Agent Orange and continues his daily battle with the VA, but he is alive and proud of his service to his country. I just got a computer and it has opened up a whole new world for me, I am searching for his buddies from Vietnam I have not had any luck but I will keep trying. I just found out that the braclet I have worn for over 30 years is of a POW who was killed in Vietnam his name is Ronald Wayne Dodge and I look everynight for his family so I might return his braclet, I know his wife was named Jan Dodge from San Diego. Thank you for this beautiful web site and for keeping the memory of Col Guy and the many Pow/Mia's that are still missing maybe one day we can all rest in peace "WHEN THEY ALL COME HOME" until then there is no peace.
God Bless you Col Guy, watch over the Pow/Mia's until they are returned home.

We hope to have a very good year getting the word out to the public that the POW-MIA issue isn't just a Vietnam issue. We are also trying to get the wird out that there are still lots of MIA's that are actively being looked for.

I browsed all I could handle, Risner's page made me cry...you see, I'm still looking for my brother, Jerry W Elliott, MIA 21Jan68, and I just returned from the 55th JTF-FA in Vietnam where I accompanied the team to the crash site at the old French Fort...no remains? Where is he? Will I ever know? I thank the Lord for you people who never give up!

Hi there. I was stationed at Ft. Bragg for 6 years and was shocked at the lack of interest from our own military leaders to acknowledge the fact that there are still fellow soldiers unaccounted for from the Vietnam war. I was only 12 when we surrendered but have been reading and studying the war since then. I was stationed in Hi. at Schofield Barracks when Nick Rowe was killed in the Phillipines. Have read numerous books on POW's and MIA's. I am very honored to know that there are those who still care. Thank you!

I spent a year at U-Tapao, Thailand, ('73 - '74), USAF, 635th MMS, supporting my fellow GIs who were being destroyed by Viet Cong, and did lose two high school friends in that awful conflict.
I salute with honor all you who did more than your mere duty to our USA, you faced & fought injury or death at the hands of those who would, at any cost, take our FREEDOMS from U.S.
Thank you for your service, your loyalty, your pride, and for this web site. It's one of the best!

There are times when to admit to God that we are weak in heart as a nation and we need His help. Real power is to hear the word of God in your heart and act with His power that He gives each one of us who except His Son Jesus Christ. His Spirit will protect us who trust in Him. This I trust . What can I do to help you my brothers . We all have words to speak to each other that seem strong and powerful, but without action who are we as son of God Almighty. We can help you. I was in Viet Nam from June 68 -June 69. Once we came by a road that had several messages stuck on bamboo sticks that read: "We have you outnumbered & we plan to attack! Throw down your weapons & run towards us. You will be treated with kindness & respect!" To a man we all locked and loaded knowing that because of men like you that endured their savage brutality that we would suffer the same! Therefore, we having that knowledge, vowed to fight to the last man to defend our freedom! We went through the supposed ambush unscathed. I can only imagine the pain and horror you must have endured to enable us to know the north truth about these "hilter like" thugs! May God Richly Bless & Forgive us all for our sins! Greetings Ted, this isnt the first time Ive viewed this page, and wont be the last. One of the best on the internet. Recently I was at what remains of the Hoa Lo. Can't say I liked it much. I just had bad vibes the whole time I was there. It gave me the creeps, I cant explain. When I left, I turned and spit on the place, vowing to never return. I spit on it for you. I spit on it for all the men that got beaten in there, and I spit on it for all the men that died there. Charlie thought I was nuts, I gave him a nasty look, found a cab, and left. That was my trip to the "Hilton." Thanks for the webpage. You take care of yourself Sir.

This is a wonderful tribute to those who fought so diligently in a war that people would like to just forget. If my late husband, George M. Stoddard, was still living today, he would be so heart-warmed by this page. He served in Vietnam, 101st Airbone Division, coming home in 1968. Whenever he watched a program about Vietnam or a movie about the war in vietnam, he would become very emotional. He wrote many poems about his time there which I have kept as a legacy for his children. On his behalf, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I served with the Royal Australian Air Force, 2 tours at Ubon. I used to see the
F-4's of the 8TFW go out on their missions and sometimes some didn't return.
I saw the F-105's from Korat & Takhli go out and many not come back. Sometimes
I'd wonder at the strength, fortitude and spirit of the USAF aircrew, they were
magnificent men, Men like Kasler, Risner and all the others that faced death
and the horror of being shot down and tortured as POW's, the strength of the

I served in country 67-68, I for one never thought all thePOW's were released, then as time went on,
I figured they had been, and Senator McCain being a former POW , would not allow the government
to abandon my fellow service members. Having gotten out of the military, then going back in and thinking
about some of the things that we did over the next 23 years, and spending most of the night in this site,
I have returned to my original thinking WE DID abandon our servicemen in vietnam. We need to either bring
them home or have a 100% positive accounting of them. Let's never forget them I will not do it again.

Each of the men profiled in this site are true heroes. In their pain and anguish they held on to what is dear to to them. God, Country and Family. Thousands of miles from anything familiar, they adhered to a written code; the Code of Conduct. Under duress they never broke. Unfortunately, time has broken many of us. It has weakened our insight into the reality of their sufferings. God forgive me and those like me who let time erase all perspective. God bless you who never let the memory fade.

Outstanding.. what can I say.. I and my family have never forgotten you guys..You were my inspiration when I flew F-4s, F-117's and finally the F-16. When I retired I made a comment to my family but especially my children that whenever a flight of military jets flew overhead to pause and let that be a constant reminder of the ultimate sacrifices made by so many that they may enjoy the freedom they have.. At the present, we have gained permission to fly the POW/MIA flag along with the Stars and Stripes at our new High School. This year the school will have a brand new football stadium and you can bet the flag will be flying every Friday Night.
Additionally, a group of us are hoping to dedicate the football field and baseball field after a MIA.. Will keep you abreast of our success..May the Lord keep all of you..For all of you who returned, let me say once again. Thank you...For the families who are still waiting..May God Bless and Keep you..

I served with the 161 Assault Helicopter Company, Bhin Dhin Province, VN 1965-66. Mainly supported the Rublic of Korea Tiger Division and ROK Marine, Army SF operations, Korean J-2 and MACV Sr. Advisor Ops. Part of the 52nd BTB and then 14th CAB. Among our crews were former POWs who servived North Korean Camps, some had surived the Bataan Death March. The unit participated in raids of suspected POW camps in Vietnam. ROK troops took hundreds of enemy POWs, we always made sure that some one was present from our unit when they interrogated the NVA Cadre and VC and NVA prisoners -- some of us had you guys in mind always and we still do and continue to support you all the step of the way to get full accountability. A lot of Army Aircrews are still carried as MIA in SVN and Laos. Following Vietnam I personally trained hundreds of aircrew men -- Military Instructor UH-l Branch, worked with the Lessons Learned to update Lesson Plans, taught U.S. and Allied Forces -- In aviation we had a moto "NO ONE GETS LEFT BEHIND"

But under the constraints that the Air Force put on us we could not always get to them in time, for this I am truely sorry, but you must know that we tried.I am having a hard time reading about these brave men with these tears in my eyes but like I said I will read them over and over,GOD BLESS Them and we will never Forget them. Your's is one of the most powerful sites I've come across in searching the net for Vietnam related sites. It absolutely rends my heart. I was stationed in up-country Thailand during the period of late '67 - '68. Life as a REMF there was relatively easy for me. But I was aware of the suffering my comrades in arms who flew missions out of Udorn Air Base and other Thai bases were undergoing. Some were downed over Laos and some over North Vietnam. Many were rescued by the brave men of the Air Rescue Recovery Service. Too many were not. As one who survived unscathed, my heart bleeds for those men. Were it not for their courage and sacrifice, there would be many, many more names on that black granite wall in DC today. May God bless them all and give them peace.

for you see ,, timothy guy sent me here, he has his site ,where he adopted
my father, CMS Thomas Moore,mia/pow 65 usaf. I found great honor in his
site dedicated to my dad.As i find great comfort in this site, With out you
and those who returned home my life growing up meant nothing and my
fathers life ended in vietnam as the politicians said. With each ex pow and
vietnam vet my dad lives on not only in my heart and soul ,, but in yours who
have kept the faith for all these years. Without you and the man who escaped
the jungles that was with my dad and three other airman. No one american
or family member would have ever known what happen to thier loved ones
i would not know what happen to my dad,my hero for my life. As you are
also a hero in the children of those men who are still unaccounted for. Yours
is truely a helpful place to visit and think, the music the site the love that
was placed here. thank you so much from the daugter of a still missing man.

I found your web site to be really moving. One of my best friends was a POW in Germany during WWII for three years. He did not have to face some of the situations that you folks did. Man's inhumanity to man! I served at Travis AFB from 1970 - 1978, but never made it to Vietnam. I retired from the Air Force in 1982 at a Chief Master Sergeant. I was one of the lucky ones. I am now on a campaign within and without my American Legion post to bring attention to POWs-MIAs from ALL wars. God bless all of you for serving honorably under unbelievably bad conditions and situations. I salute you!

It's the night before Christmas, and the weather is cold here tonight, but the house is warm. We are certainly blessed to have the things we do. Sometimes, we have trouble understanding how fortunate we are and how much we have to be thankful about. Your site makes it a lot easier. The Vietnam War lasted a long time, and I'm happy that it is over. Desert Shield lasted a while, but Desert Storm was fairly short, and I'm happy they are over. We've had some problems since. Although the world seems a lot less dangerous than it was, there is still plenty of cause to be prepared. Many of the people who carry our legacy are in the service tonight. I'm very proud of them, especially the airmen and women of whatever service, their families, and the folks on the ground who support them. I'm also very proud of the other men and women who serving in the armed forces or will. God Bless Them, and God Bless You. Best Wishes, Bob Clewell Vietnam '64-'71 (46 months).

Your work shall truly be rewarded, for you have not forsaken our brothers. History will prove how America DID leave her heroes behind. It boggles my mind that Americans can be so dumb or blind to the facts that are so plain to see in front of them concerning the POW/MIA'S. I get so p***ed off, with these so-called Veterans organizations the do nothing, and are more concerned
with their "casino nights" and fund raisings to keep there bars stocked, and completely ignore the POW/MIA facts, except to think just flying the black flag will serve the purpose. It would be nice to see a mass-demonstration in DC, for two or three days...and really tie up that city and put our local, state and national official on notice that we want action, not words.

I'm just a nameless silhouette; nobody knows my face,
'Though many of you pray for me each day:
The man you said you won't forget, in a dark and distant place.
I am the POW; I am the MIA.
I am a Navy pilot; I am a dead Marine;
I am the wounded Grunt they couldn't find.
But I'm living still and I'm long dead and I'm somewhere in between,
And I can't believe that I was left behind.
They killed me in an ambush, and they captured me alive,
And I died when my Huey crashed and burned.
They over-ran my unit, but I managed to survive,
And they brought me north in chains when they returned.
They beat me and they whipped me, and they worked me 'til I dropped.
To break my will, they made their best endeavor.
When great despair had gripped me, still the torture never stopped:
They told me, "We can keep you here forever."
They told me that my Parents died, that my Kids were grown and gone;
That my Wife lost hope and married my Best Friend.
But there's a Prayer I hold inside that helps me to go on:
That someone still remembers, and they'll bring me Home again.
I'm just a nameless silhouette; nobody knows my face,
'Though many of you pray for me each day:
The man you said you won't forget in a dark and distant place.
I am the POW. I am the MIA.
God Bless

Only in America can a draft dodger live in the white house and a Viet Nam Vet live in a cardboard box on the street. God Bless you all for remembering in Honor our Eternal Heros. They will never be forgotten. They will all, someday walk with or Master. I spent 9 yrs in the US Army from 1966 to 1975. I did two tours in the Republic of South Viet Nam, 67-68, 4th Inf. Div LRRP and 70-71 with 101st Airborn. I am proud to have been able to serve, I am proud of my Father and Mother who are both now gone, for raising the American Flag every day I was there. I'm equally sorry to say, I am not proud of our Executive Branch of Government. It will never be on their agenda to bring to closure the fact that they deserted our brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers in Viet Nam. To do so would only bring more shame on them. They only hope to pass the buck long enough to distance themselves from the blaim. I Thank you Sincerly for allowing me to visit your site and hope and pray my words do not disrespect these many heros named here. God bless their families as he dose them. Sincerly, SSG, Phillip D.
